Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, saying the decision was taken after “deep reflection and extensive consultations” and motivated by a desire to preserve peace and unity in the state.
In a press statement dated May 20, 2026, Governor Fubara described the decision as “difficult but necessary,” and framed it as an act of leadership and sacrifice. He said Rivers State “is bigger than any individual” and that the state’s peace, stability and unity must take precedence over personal ambition.
“To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey… I offer my deepest gratitude,” Fubara said, acknowledging the disappointment his withdrawal may cause but asking for continued loyalty to the party. He added that his earlier silence had been “deliberate and strategic,” and reiterated that his stepping aside was motivated by conviction, not fear.
Fubara thanked the APC for the platform and support he received and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement. He pledged to back whoever emerges as the APC candidate and urged party faithful to remain committed to building a “stronger and more united” future.
The governor also affirmed his commitment to continue serving Rivers people for the remainder of his term.
The withdrawal reshapes the dynamics of the APC primary contest in Rivers and is likely to influence the party’s unity and electoral strategy ahead of the state election.
