Gov. Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has called on the citizens of the state to promote a healthy environment to achieve the objectives of the “Keep Kaduna State Clean” programme.
The governor made the call in Kaduna on Monday at the celebration of the 2017 World Environmental Day, which has “Connecting People with Nature” as its theme.
He said the state government would continue to formulate programmes and policies that were geared towards promoting healthy environment in order to address the menace of environmental degradation.
El-Rufai, who was represented by the Commissioner for Stakeholders Relations, Mr. Balarabe Shehu, advised the people to support government policies by desisting from harmful environmental practices such as indiscriminate tree felling and poor sanitation.
He said that the World Environment Day was celebrated to remind people of their collective responsibilities towards ensuring that “our planet remains green and comfortable for all.”
The governor stressed the need for people to connect with nature, saying that the state was endowed with vast environmental resources which potential investors could harness and exploit.
El-Rufai said his administration was investing a lot of resources in cleaning Kaduna, Kafanchan and Zaria so as to make the cities comfortable for the residents.
He said the neatness of the cities was, however, being challenged by the littering of plastic materials and other negative human behaviours.
The Commissioner for Environment, Amina Dyeris, underscored the need for the people to promote sound environmental practices, while addressing the impact of climate change on the environment.
She said that the state government was executing a realistic waste management programme, adding that it would soon start a door-to-door collection of waste in some parts of the state.
Dyeris urged the people to cooperate with the government in efforts to eliminate harmful environmental practices.
“The Ministry of Environment is also implementing programmes and policies to address the challenges of forest degradation, while constructing drainage channels in flood-prone areas,” she said.
Environmental experts at the event commended the state government for its initiative to keep the state’s environment green for both residents and investors.
They called on the government and other relevant authorities to embark on massive enlightenment campaigns to sensitise the citizens to good environmental and sanitation habits.
