An All Progressive National Congress (APC) stalwart, Sen. Bola Tinubu and Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday called on APC women forum in the state to mobilize their members across the state for the next local government elections scheduled for July 22, 2017 and ensure that the party comes out victorious in all the 20 LG and 37 local councils development areas (LCDAs).
They gave the advice at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Leader’s lecture & award organised by the APC national zonal women leader (South West), Chief Mrs. Kemi Nelson, at Nana’s Arena Events centre, Central Business District, Agidingbi.
Tinubu, while sounding optimistic for the victory of the party at the polls, disclosed that out of the 3.6 million registered voters in Lagos State, 2.83 million were women, urging them to use their large number to coast to victory for the ruling party.
Represented by the Lagos APC chairman, Dr. Henry Ajomale, Tinubu noted that statistics showed that women, who have registered in the state for the party, were more than the men, which according to him, shows great commitment and loyalty to the ruling party.
''This is why the party respects, recognizes and value women for their role in the progress and the success of the party. We are calling on our women to once again do what they do best by going out en masse on July 22 to vote for our great party,'' Tinubu urged.
In his keynote address, Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode urged women to rise to the challenge once again by mobilizing support for all APC candidates at the forthcoming councils polls, noting that the ongoing reforms and infrastructure development programmes embarked upon by his administration would be at best when they touch people at the grassroots through their elected representatives.
Ambode who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Idiat Adebule, also urged them to turn out en mass and exercise their constitutional rights at the polling booths in favour of APC.
''You should see this event as a call to duty as our great party will be fielding candidates for election as chairmen and councilors’ at LGAs and LCDAs on July 22,'' she said.
The governor said commitment and loyalty of women to the cause of the APC, especially at the 2015 general elections, were worthy of commendation.
''Your contributions and efforts have translated to the resounding successes registered by our party in ensuring that the benefits of democracy impact on the lives of the people.
''Women were counted in the forefront of the tremendous change that our party has brought to governance in Nigeria and Lagos State,'' Ambode said.
In her address, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, urged more women to get involved so they could occupy more elective positions in the country.
In her lecture entitled 'Women, let's lead the progress,' Mrs. Dupe Olaiya urged party leaders to consider and encourage more women for elective positions.
According to her, women turned out in their large numbers to campaign and vote during election period but they were not well represented in the nation's polity.
She urged political leaders to make necessary constitutional amendment that would put women at their right position in governance.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Kemi Nelson, APC national women leader in the South-West, said the event was to celebrate and recognise women in the different council areas, who had been working hard to promote the ideals of APC in the state and country.
''These women toil in sunshine and in rain to campaign, mobilise and vote to promote and uplift the APC party at all times.
''We are here to honour these unnoticed women in politics so they can redouble their efforts and inspire others to ensure the progress of the party,'' Nelson said.
Highlight of the celebration was presentation of certificates/awards to women who have contributed meaningfully to the growth of the party, irrespective of their status.
