The weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has been called off today, according to a brief statement by Mr. Femi Adesina, special adviser to President Buhari on media and publicity.
The press statement noted that the president will however, receive report of the investigation committee into the allegations against the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ayo Oke, headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, at 12 noon, in his office.
President Buhari had on Wednesday, April 19, suspended both Lawal and Oke via a statement, also by Mr. Adesina.
The Senate had found Lawal guilty of complicity in the finances meant for the welfare of the Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) in the north east and had called on the president to remove him.
He was subsequently directed to proceed on suspension from office, pending outcome of investigations into his indictment by a Senate report for allegedly contravening the provisions of the public procurement act and the federal government’s financial rules and regulations pertaining to award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).
In a related development, the president also ordered full scale investigation into the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, over which the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) made a claim.
The investigation was to enquire into the circumstances in which the NIA came into possession of the funds, how and by whose or which authority the funds were made available to the NIA, and to establish whether or not there has been a breach of the law or security procedure in obtaining custody and use of the funds.
A three-man committee comprising the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the National Security Adviser, headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, was to conduct the investigations.
During the period of investigation, the most senior permanent secretary in the SGF's office, and the most senior officer in the NIA, were to act, respectively.
The committee was mandated to submit its report to the president within 14 days. That, however, was not to be as the president had to embark on prolong medical vacation.
