Some ethnic groups in the country, have reaffirmed their commitment to a united and peaceful Nigeria where the rights of citizens to live peacefully is guaranteed.
In a communiqué at the end of a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the groups said that restatement of their commitment to the progress of the country stemmed after a review of situation in the country, including insecurity.
The groups are Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Ohaneze Youths Council Worldwide (OYC), Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Yoruba Youth Congress (YYC) and Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC).
Others are Tiv Youth Congress (TYC), Ibibio Youth Council (IYC) and Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF).
They said that all Nigerians had the moral duty to be their brother’s keeper anywhere in the country.
They reassured Igbos and other ethnic groups resident in the North of safety of their lives and property.
According to them, all Nigerians reserve the right to pursue their legitimate businesses and livelihood without fear wherever they choose to reside in the country.
They also assured northerners and members of other ethnic nationalities resident in the East to go about their businesses without fear, saying that the safety of their lives and property, was guaranteed.
The groups stressed the need for Nigerians to restrain from communication or aberrations that could affect the collective resolve of the majority of Nigerians and the country´s development.
They also reassured Nigerians of the unwavering commitment of various ethnic groups to work toward building a prosperous country in the interest of all, irrespective of ethnic affiliations.
According to the communique, the groups have concluded plans to hold a summit in October where stakeholders will discuss a framework for the future and how citizens will live in peace and harmony. (NAN)
