Labourer receives 15 strokes of cane for criminal conspiracy

A Mararaba Upper Area Court, in Nasarawa State, on Tuesday ordered that a 21-year-old labourer, Awal Idris, be given 15 strokes of the cane for criminal conspiracy.

Idris, resident of Jankawa Masaka, Nasarawa State, was convicted after pleading guilty to a two-charge of conspiracy and attempt to commit an offence.

The Judge, Mr. Ibrahim Shekarau, said the punishment would serve as deterrent to others.

“This will also serve as a warning to others that have the mind to commit such crimes.
“I, hereby order two court officials to give him 15 strokes of the cane,” he ordered.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Prosecutor Godwin Ejeh had told the court that the convict conspired with two others, now at large, to commit the crime on Oct. 28.

Ejeh said on the same date, at about 3:00 a.m., the convict and his accomplices went to one Pat Eneh’s shop at Abacha Road, Mararaba, with the intention to steal.

He added that the convict was caught while his accomplices ran away as they were trying to open the shop’s door.

He said the offences contravened Sections 95 and 97 of the Penal Code.
