At the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Oprah Winfrey gave a powerful speech while accepting the annual Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement that dominated the news cycle on Monday.
Her powerful words on sexual misconduct, gender inequality, and corruption drove the black-clad celebrity crowd to its feet and brought on fervent calls for the business mogul to run for president.
On Monday night, Ivanka Trump joined the conversation, with a tweet lauding Winfrey’s oration and seemingly signaling the first daughter’s support for the Time’s Up movement, which was created by women in the entertainment industry to end sexual harassment in all industries via activism, legal funds, and legislation.
Ivanka simply stated “Just saw Oprah’s empowering and inspiring speech at last night’s Golden Globes. Let’s all come together, women and men, and say #TIMESUP!”, while tweeting out a video of Winfrey at the podium.
But many on Twitter, including celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen and Alyssa Milano, were quick to respond:
“You're kidding right? Say it to your father and then join the movement.
So you'll ask your father to resign?”
“ew go away”
“When she was talking about corruption, she was talking about you and your family. Did you miss that?”
“Honestly Ivanka, it took a staggering level of heinous idiocy for you to post this tweet.”
“Someone going to tell her? Didn’t Bannon say she was dumb as a rock Fire and Fury?”
“Can’t wait to get the book tomorrow!”
“This is the most hypocritical, clueless statement in her regrettable time in the WH. Your father has a trail of victims and supported Roy Moore, Ivanka. YOU are indeed part of the problem Ivanka. #complicit”
“Great! You can make a lofty donation to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund that is available to support your father's accusers.https://www.timesupnow.com”
Some pointed out the irony of the first daughter’s support for Winfrey’s words.
In her speech, Winfrey made thinly-veiled allusions to the Trump presidency, saying: “We know the press is under siege these days. We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To—to tyrants and victims, and secrets and lies. I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times.”
Winfrey also spoke at length about sexual harassment and the mistreatment of women such as Recy Taylor by “brutally powerful men,” stating, “for too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men.”
Winfrey added “But their time is up. Their time is up,” referring to the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements that have brought down some of the most powerful men in entertainment, media, and, to some extent, politics.
The fact that Donald Trump has been accused of sexual misconduct by 13 women was, of course, not lost on Twitter.
Ivanka’s fans, on the other hand, were quick to add the first daughter’s name to the presidential mix, suggesting she compete with Oprah to be the first female president.
“You would be 100x as good a president as Oprah!!”
And according to Michael Wolff’s much-talked-about new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House those words may not be too far off.
“Balancing risk against reward, both Jared and Ivanka decided to accept roles in the West Wing over the advice of almost everyone they knew,” wrote Wolff. “It was a joint decision by the couple, and, in some sense, a joint job.
Between themselves, the two had made an earnest deal: If sometime in the future the opportunity arose, she’d be the one to run for president. The first woman president, Ivanka entertained, would not be Hillary Clinton; it would be Ivanka Trump.”
Game on, Oprah.
