CBN mourns former Governor, Adamu Ciroma

The Governor and Management of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with a deep sense of loss, announce the passage of the banks former governor, Mallam Adamu Ciroma.

Mallam Ciroma, who was the Governor of the Bank from September 24, 1975 to June 28 1977, died on July 5, 2018.  

Born on November 20 1934 in Potiskum, Yobe State, the late Ciroma was a graduate of University of Ibadan and served in different capacities in the Public Service.  

According to a statement from the CBN, the late Ciroma was appointed to the board of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1970, where he served as a Director before his appointment as the Governor in 1975. He also served as Minister in the Ministries of Industry, Agriculture and Finance and on the board of several companies. 

The CBN statement further states that until his demise, Mallam Ciroma was still of immense service to the bank. He was a firm believer in the sanctity and independence of the CBN.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, an astute central banker and a patriot, we also celebrate his remarkable life and contribution to the banking industry in Nigeria," the apex bank said, adding, "We pray Almighty Allah to grant his family and the nation the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss."

He is survived by his wife and children and has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
