France book a ticket to the final of W/Cup 2018, defeat Belgium 1:0

The French team celebrates

Huge celebrations from the men in blue in St. Petersburg while there are bewildered faces in red. Antoine Griezmann is in tears as his country, France, qualifies for the final of of the FIFA World Cup taking place in Russia.

France, who blew it in their own Euros final two years ago, will now be favourites to win their second World Cup.

Former Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 described the win over Belgium as deserved. According to him, the Belgians had 64% of the possession but the French deserved to win.

"When they got the goal, they knew how to kill the game a work together. Every time Hazard or De Bruyne got the ball they were smothered.

"At no point in the second half did I think Belgium were going to score. This French team are good and they are getting better.

Speaking after the game, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, in a BBC report, said: "It was a dead ball situation which was the difference.

"It was a close game and it was very tight and it was going to be decided by that bit of luck in front of goal. The attitude of the players was brilliant and we couldn't ask for anymore. We have to understand one team wins and the other loses, and we did what we could."

Asked about the French goal, Martinez added: "That is the type of detail that counts in the semi-final of the World Cup. We have one game left and I want to ensure we finish the tournament on a high because these players don't deserve to leave here with a bad taste."

France will play their third final over the last six WC tournaments (since 1998). No other side have reached the WC final as many times in this period. Germany has done so twice,  Brazil also twice.
