Some suspected thugs on Monday attacked a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Fatai Oyedele, popularly known as Diekola.

The PDP chieftain was attacked in the Alekuwodo area of Osun State, close to Adewale polling unit 17 in Oshogbo, the state capital, where a supplementary election would be holding on Thursday.

He was said to have visited the area after he got information that PDP supporters had been accosted while carrying out their door-to-door campaign.

A resident who spoke to Channels Television, alleged that the said thugs were agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Some APC agents stormed our area around 6:00 am, convincing us to trade our permanent voter cards for the sum of N50,000. We told them we didn’t want their money, but we want to make a statement with our right. Some women fell for their antics and their Voter Identification Number was taken note of. After that, their PVCs were collected,” the resident said.

Another eyewitness, who spoke to Channels Television said he noticed some vehicles, with the Osun State Government House plate number trooping into the area in the early hours of the day.

According to the eyewitness, shortly after their arrival, there was a shootout and two persons were injured in the process.

He said, “It was very early this morning that some APC people came to this area. They were talking to a few people and in short while they collected their PVCs and handed over some cash to them.

“Later, we also saw some PDP guys begging residents to vote for them. They didn’t come with any money but they were canvassing for their candidate. Before we knew it, they were accosted by those PDP agents and it was in the middle of that fracas that a call was put through to Alhaji Diekola, who drove in almost immediately.

“Just as fast as he drove in, he was attacked by those men who came in government house vehicles, accompanied by some Civil Defence Corps.

“They shot sporadically at Diekola’s Toyota Corolla’s car, while some of them wrecked the car and inflicted varying degrees of injuries on both Diekola and his driver.”

Some of the injured persons were immediately rushed to a hospital in the area.

Meanwhile, in the community, there was still an atmosphere of fear despite the police officers being on ground to enforce law and order.
