The Nigerian Army has said that its troops are currently battling for the control of the fishing town of Baga in Kukawa local government area of Borno state.
Chief of Training and operations, Major General Lamidi Adeosun made this known in Maiduguri, during a press conference at the headquarters of the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole.
Adeosun gave the report of operations in Baga town while informing the press that the Army has flagged off its Operation “Egwu Eke” III, to intensify security operations across the nation.
He said the exercise is expected to run concurrently in the six geopolitical zones of the country in the build-up to the 2019 elections, ensuring stability in troubled areas.
Responding to questions from journalists, Adeosun denied reports that insurgents have hoisted their flag at the Headquarters of the Multi National Joint Task Force which is located in Baga town.
Adeosun, however, noted that Operation Lafiya Dole troops are currently battling for the control of Baga.
He further stressed that the army is not in total control, as they are still battling to rid Baga of the Boko Haram elements.
Boko Haram sacked two military bases in northeast Nigeria overnight as the jihadist fighters battled for control of Baga town, AFP reports.
Military sources reportedly said on Thursday that the Jihadists from the IS-supported Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) overran a naval base and a multinational joint task force (MNJTF) post in Baga after a fierce battle.
According to the sources who spoke to AFP, fighters in several vehicles stormed Baga and engaged troops in intense fighting at the MNJTF base which hosts units from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
The insurgents also sacked a naval base in Mile 3 which lies five kilometres from Baga, a military source who asked not to be identified told AFP.
“The troops were overpowered and forced to withdraw,” the source said, adding that “the terrorists carted away gun trucks, ammunition and multiple rocket launchers from the base.”
Troops from the two bases withdrew to another naval base at Fish Dam on the shores of Lake Chad, the military source said.
