COVID-19: No presidential address today as PTF extends ease of lockdown by 2 week

Special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina has said there is no truth in the report making the rounds in traditional and social media to the effect that President Muhammadu Buhari would address the nation, today, to give updates on the Coronavirus pandemic.
This is even as the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has further extended the gradual easing of lockdown in Lagos, Ogun states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, by another two weeks.
Chairman of the PTF on COVID-19 pandemic and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, disclosed this during the daily media briefing of the Task Force. in Abuja.

Mr. Mustapha said the extension of the easing of the lockdown became necessary because of the increasing number of cases in the country.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari, had during an online meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, said that the PTF had already briefed him on next steps in the national response to the pandemic, stressing that he had directed that they work very closely with the governors to engender better harmony in the daunting task of checking the pandemic.

The president who noted that the pandemic is beyond “technology, power, and resources,” said countries that have all those, were recording highest casualties round the world.

“We have to be very careful. We need to continue to educate and persuade the people to accept the reality of the situation, and do all that is necessary to stay safe”.

A statement by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, to the effect, stated that the meeting also discussed economic and security issues, among others, adding that the Governors commended the President on the “leadership and direction” he has given the country in combating COVID-19.

But in the terse tweet from Adesina’s verified twitter account, @Femi Adesina, denying any planned broadcast by the presidential today, Adesina said that the report of a presidential broadcast was sheer fake news and not on the agenda of the president for Monday, May 18, 2020.
The tweet read, “No presidential broadcast on COVID-19 updates today. None was planned. Rather, the Presidential Task Force will during its usual media briefings bring the nation up to speed on the next steps.”
