When the story hit the media space last night, I struggled to get a grasp of what I was reading. I desperately wanted someone to say it wasn’t true. I a had hard time typing those painful words ‘Rest In Peace’ for Dee Bonnie, as I, and indeed, most of us, fondly call him. And it will be a tough one doing so here, no doubt.
Dee Bonnie, a cherished brother, mentor, great motivator and cheerleader is happy when you are happy and sad when you are sad but does everything doable at such time to see you come out of your mood. Now they say he is gone!
Dee Bonnie is (still find it so hard to refer to him in the past) ever ready to lift your spirit, no matter what your troubles are, be them professional or personal.
Dee Bonnie, a former commissioner for information in Abia state and former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, was also a fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors. He loved the profession and lived it. Saw him last in Kano, June this year, at one of our meetings and he never failed to play the role of a great motivator.
He was his usual self encouraging and pushing all of us for greater heights and didn’t looked any bit sick. I was so impressed with the way he bounced back after a brain surgery couple of years back.
Then came the worry in November when an alarm was raised over the state of his health in a group we all belong to. And I was damned worried then as I feared he may have had a relapse. I was out of the country at the time and tried hard to reach him but couldn’t. No one could, actually, because he wasn’t taking calls or even receiving visitors.
That, in my mind, created more worries, until he showed up on the forum with the good news we all had been waiting for. He had beaten whatever was ailing him and the forum erupted with praise and thanks to God for healing.
I Planned to reach him on my return, but hadn’t done that. And now this sad news!
Dee Bonnie Iwuoha, last night, was announced to have gone to be with his maker. I will miss his words of advise and encouragement, his prayers, praises/accolades which he always showered on me, and always in abundance.
To say he was a complete gentleman is to sum it all up and I will cherish the joy and peace he endeavored to spread here on earth. A good man is gone.
Rest well, Dee Bonnie Iwuoha and may the all knowing God grant your family and all of us who got to know and related with you the fortitude to bear this huge loss.😢ðŸ˜☹️
