BARBARIC: Senior student slit 11-yr-old’s throat for refusing to run errand for him

Just as Nigerians are yet to get over the gory incident at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, where a student, Sylvester Omoroni, was allegedly bullied to death by some senior students, as well as the recent abduction and subsequent killing of a five-year-old, Haneefa Abubakar, allegedly by the proprietor of her school, Noble Kids School in Kano, another beastly act has been reported, this time in Borno State.

Information reaching us has it that an 11-year-old student of Elkanemi College of Islamic Theology in Maiduguri, the state capital, last week, had his throat slit by a senior student in the school. The perpetrator is said to be a son of a ‘big man’ from the state.

A source connected to the family of the victim told Newsmart that the incident happened last week. He gave the name of the victim as Jibril Sadi Mato, son of a late Kano State High court judge, Justice Muhammad Sadi Mato, while the alleged culprit is said to be one Umar Goni, an SS2 student.

Umar was said to have asked Jibril to run an errand for him but Jibril excused himself, saying that he wanted to use the toilet. Our source explained further that “Later in the evening, the senior student as a result, called Jibril to the quite backyard of the dormitory and used a razor blade to slit his throat.”

He said Jubril was later found in pool of blood and has been in intensive cure unit of (ICU) of a hospital in the state since then. Jubril’s case is so bad that doctors are of the view that even he survives the barbaric attack on him, he might not be able to speak again.

Our source also revealed that although the matter was reported to the police, everyone has remained quite, as if nothing happened.

His words: “The Police, the government of Borno state, the school authorities have all somehow connived to be silent. Because the perpetrator is a son of a ‘big man’, so they are trying to cover it up,” he said, adding that what matters to the family of the victim right now, though, is how to save the life of their kid.

Sadly pictures we have of Jubril Mato are so gory that we will not be able to publish most of them right now.

Jubril’s mother, Hajiya Aisha, is said to have remarried a senior civil servant with the Yobe State government.

Reports however have it that to the chagrin of the family members of the victim, Aisha’s new husband, (Jubril’s stepfather), who was called by the school management shortly after the incident, tried to discourage the victim and his mother from reporting the attack.

A staff of the college, who also spoke to journalists, according to another report, confirmed that the case of Jubril Mayo is not the first as there have been several such cases that have occurred in the college but the school management kept hiding the incidents, thus emboldening perpetrators and leading to an increase in the crime.

“This is not the first case of armed violence in the college. There are several other cases relating to sexual abuse and armed violence, but the school management had swept it under the carpet. This is likely to mean we are creating more victims as a result of our failure to act,” the teacher lamented,” the source argued
