Presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed shock at the terror attack on a Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State. He described the incident which claimed the lives of many worshipers as a very sad event and a sad day in the history of Nigeria.
Suspected terrorists were said to have blown up St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, leaving about 40 worshippers dead and many others injured.
In a statement by his Media Office, Obi lamented the continued descent of the country into insecurity and state failure, bemoaning the mindless killing of innocent worshippers, a development he described as ‘sad and heart-breaking.’
Obi condemned the rising tide of violence in almost every part of the country, warning that no nation ever progressed with the level of insecurity Nigeria was currently experiencing. He added that what was more painful was that worshippers were killed with careless abandon by the angels of death, right in their place of worship
“The heartless waste of precious lives in Ondo today, and indeed in other parts of the country, where lives are lost in droves, reminds us how awfully we have retrogressed as a nation and the herculean task of nation-building ahead of us (as we work to take) back our nation from insecurity and every other form of failure holding us down,” Obi lamented.
He condoled with the Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu; Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Most Reverend Jude Arogundade and the good people of Ondo over the tragic incident, praying God to comfort the families of the victim.
“These are very challenging times for us all as a people, but with hope, hard work and resilience, we shall overcome,” Obi surmised.
