Yoruba Nation Rally: Magistrate rules that Jumoke was killed by Police

The late Jumoke

A coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jumoke Oyeleke, a lady reportedly killed by a stray bullet during a Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos State on July 3, 2021, has returned a verdict indicting the police.

The coroner, Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi, who sat at the magistrate court in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos State, stated on Monday that the police shot the deceased and caused her untimely death.

Group of Nigerians; the Yoruba Nation agitators, had converged at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, on July 3, 2021, seeking an independent state for the Yoruba-dominated South-West, and during which Jumoke, a 25-year-old salesgirl, was allegedly shot dead by stray bullet.

“The only logical conclusion is that the deceased died from a weapon by the Nigerian police,” the coroner stated, adding that the Jumoke family deserved sympathy.

In 2021, police prosecutor had described how Jumoke met her death during the rally.
