Journalists have been tasked to amplify the voices of out-of-school children that are gradually becoming a menace as well as putting the children at great risk in the society.
Dr. Tushar Rane, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Nigeria Bauchi Field Office, threw the challenge to journalists drawn from Gombe, Taraba and Bauchi States, who were in Misau, Bauchi State, for a media dialogue on out of school children in Bauchi State.
He described the media as drivers of social discuss and advocates for change whom UNICEF have been partnering with to ensure it achieves its goals of increasing enrollment of children into schools.
According to him, the media dialogue is expected to motivate journalists into amplifying the voices of out-of-school children and reaffirm commitment towards ensuring that no child is left behind.
He said, "this media dialogue will be a platform for open and constructive discussion on the root cause of the issue of out of school children, the challenges hindering school aged children access to education and most importantly the potential solutions that we can collectively work towards in Bauchi State.
He pointed out that the media has roles to play in ensuring that children of out of school age in Bauchi State are enrolled into schools at the right age. "By working hand in hand, we can pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for the children in Bauchi and beyond", he maintained.
He also said that UNICEF will be engaging traditional and religious stakeholders, school based management committees and youths to ensure effective mobilization of parents, guardians, communities, on the importance of enrolling all school age children in schools.
"The media must also be involved", he emphasized.
