One year after the 2022 floods that devastated over 13,000 victims in Gombe State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has commenced it's intervention with relief materials’ distribution for 13, 299 households affected across the State.
Chief Administration Officer of NEMA, Mr. Yusuf Isah, who led the distribution team from Abuja to Gombe State, said the relief materials consist of food and non food items.
He gave list of the food items to include, rice, beans, sorghum, Maggie, salt, vegetable oil, blankets, mats, mosquito nets as well as detergents to be distributed to over 1,300 victims in Kwami LGA alone, which was worst hit by the disaster.
Other non food items distributed include sewing machines, grinding machines, water pumps for dry season farmers, sprayers, fertilisers, herbicides and seedlings.
According to Mr. Isah, the gesture was under the Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI), aimed at bringing succour to victims and vulnerable persons in Gombe State.
“There are over 1,300 that will benefit in Kwami LGA alone and from tomorrow (Thursday) we will continue with other local governments until we cover the whole state,” he said.
Inaugurating the commencement of the distribution, Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, who was represented by the Secretary to the Gombe State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, said it was the fulfilment of a promise by the governor to bring what rightfully belongs to Gombe people.
He said, "this is a fulfilment of one of our campaign promises, if we had not voted for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we wouldn't have gotten these relief materials."
He commended the federal government for the gesture and appealed to beneficiaries to make good use of the items. He also warned against selling the items given to them with the aim of alleviating poverty and empower them economically.
He announced that the state government would soon roll out its palliatives across the state to help citizens cushion the impact of subsidy removal and the current hardship being faced by Nigerians.
The Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, Haruna Abdullahi, commended the Federal Government for coming to the aid of flood victims through NEMA.
He said the 2022 flood caused extensive damage in 33 communities across the state adding that, “the sad incidence had caused the loss of 13 human lives in four Local Government Areas of Funakaye, Kwami, Yamaltu Deba, and Kaltungo with property estimated at millions of Naira lost.”
