Gombe deputy governor counsels Customs officers on good leadership

By Williams Ago, Gombe

Gombe State deputy governor, Manasseh Daniel Jatau (PhD), has described good leadership as one of the major factors propelling development in any organization.

The deputy governor, himself a retired Deputy Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs, said in a paper he presented as a Guest Speaker at the Comptroller General of Customs Conference, that leadership plays a pivotal role in triggering development in organizations.

The event which took place at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, had in attendance many officers of the NCS.

He said, "the consequences of bad leadership has been the bane of development decades after decades in spite of abundant human and natural resources."

Dr. Manasseh, who called on the leadership of the Nigerian Customs to be vibrant, exemplary and exhibit high sense of resilience in the midst of daunting challenges, stressed that it is the panacea to successful service delivery.

According to him, "leaders are expected to ensure that organizations are effective, be they public or private.”

He stressed also that the 'death' of numerous private organizations, banks, airlines and many others and the experience of Nigerians after the privatization where the sellers were the buyers, are pointers that ownership structure has nothing to do with effectiveness.

He observed that effective organizations are those that adapt more efficiently to environmental and internal challenges.

"The fallacy that the ownership structure of organizations determines effectiveness or otherwise should be discarded by now," he emphasized.

He therefore challenged leaders to be relevant, responsible, resilient and adaptive in order to address challenges facing organizations in critical periods.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, called for a paradigm shift to open governance, not just as a trend but a complete transformation for greater productivity.
