The screening of candidates for the next stage of the ongoing recruitment exercise into the Constable cadre of the Nigeria Police Force is set to conclude tomorrow. Dr. Solomon Arase, chairman of the Police Service Commission and a retired Inspector General of Police, has emphasized the need for mentally agile and adaptable individuals with fertile minds who can effectively engage with the public.
Arase has declared that what the nation needs now are policemen who are mentally mobile with fertile minds and who can relate with the public.
This, of course, underscores the importance of both mental and physical preparedness in law enforcement. Aspiring officers are expected to not only meet the physical fitness requirements but also to exceed expectations, reflecting the increasing demands of the profession.
Arase spoke in Abuja, Tuesday, January 30, 2024, when he paid a courtesy visit on the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Martriculation Board (JAMB) Professor Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, CON, and the management team of the agency where he discussed the needed conditions for the examination body to conduct the computer-based tests for the Constable applicants.
Dr. Arase who also led the management team of the Commission to the meeting noted that the Police Force he joined 42 years ago was knowledge-based with officers who can relate with the public and engender love and confidence.
The PSC chairman, according to a press release signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations unit of the Commission, told the JAMB registrar that there is need for a paradigm shift in the recruitment of Nigerian youths into the Force, adding that if the Commission can get 50 percent high flyers with this recruitment, the progression to a better and effective Police Service would have started. He added that mentally mobile policemen will have self confidence and capable of discharging their duties creditably.
He announced that going forward, the JAMB computer-based tests will be done first before the screening exercises so that those with questionable certificates will be weeded out if they cannot defend the certificates they brandish. "We want to give Nigerians policemen, who should be able to hold their own and with constant training, the sky will be their limit."
The JAMB Register eulogiesed the PSC chairman on his track record of leadership accomplishments and noted that he is happy to associate with him and the project of giving Nigeria a brand new and qualitative Police officers, who will serve the nation with dignity.
He advised that the recruitment exercise should take note of the peculiarities of our diverse population and get the best for every state and zone.
It is worthy to note that recruitment and retention of police officers are crucial for the modern law enforcement agency, with a direct link between the physical and mental well-being of officers and the challenges they face in their roles.
