Cote D’Ivoire beat Nigeria 2:1 to win AFCON 2023. The Elephants came from behind to secure their victory, with Sebastien Haller scoring a dramatic late winner
This marked their third CAF Africa Cup of Nations win, and it was a remarkable tournament for the hosts
Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller were among the goal scorers for Cote D’Ivoire
The final result, no doubt, was a fairytale ending for Côte d’Ivoire. They emerged as the new champions of Africa despite losing twice in the group stage of a tournament only to proceed to win the same tournament. One of the losses was a 0:4 trashing by Equatorial Guinea. The other was to the team it eventually beat in the final - Nigeria.
Nigeria’s defeat to Cote D'Ivoire was mostly blamed on lack of a creative midfielder in the Super Eagles during the match. It would appear that while the Eagles slumbered, the Elephants slugged it out and their effort was rewarded with the resounding victory by the Elephants.
Nonetheless and overall, it was a decent outing for the Super Eagles, who many never gave a chance of even making it to the semis before the tournament.
