In the wake of the disruption on March 14, 2024, which severely impacted data and voice services along the coasts of Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal due to cuts in undersea fibre optics, operators have successfully restored services to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities.
This significant progress comes as a result of operators leveraging recovery capacity from unaffected submarine cables to mitigate the effects of the cuts, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said in a press statement.
The statement signed by NCC’s director of public affairs, Reuben Muoka, conveys assurances of mobile network operators that both data and voice services are now operating optimally, thanks to the activation of alternative connectivities.
While full repairs on the affected undersea cables are pending, the activation of these alternative connections has effectively normalized the situation, the commission said.
The telecom industry therefore, extends its gratitude to consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts.
This collaborative effort between operators and regulators highlights the resilience and adaptability of the telecommunications sector in overcoming challenges to ensure uninterrupted services for users.
