International Girls in ICT Day: NCC highlights the importance of female STEM leadership

In a show of solidarity with the global ICT community, the management and staff of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) marked the International Girls in ICT Day on April 25, 2024.

The NCC, as the country's telecoms regulator, led other stakeholders in commemorating the event, which is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of April.  The celebration aims to empower and inspire young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This year's theme for the Girls in ICT Day celebrations, "Leadership," shines a spotlight on the critical importance of strong female role models in STEM careers.

The NCC recognizes the significance of encouraging girls to explore opportunities in the ICT industry, as their contributions are vital for driving innovation and progress in the sector.

The Commission, by the development, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote STEM education and career paths for girls. By providing mentorship, educational resources, and hands-on learning opportunities, the Commission aims to nurture a new generation of female leaders who will shape the future of technology in Nigeria and beyond.

The celebration of International Girls in ICT Day therefore underscores the NCC's dedication to fostering diversity and inclusion within the ICT sector as it believes that a diverse workforce, with equal representation of women and men, is essential for driving innovation and addressing the unique challenges faced by different communities.

NCC's participation in the International Girls in ICT Day celebrations, therefore, is a reflection of its unwavering commitment to empowering women and girls in the ICT industry to pursue their passions and contribute to the growth and development of the ICT sector in Nigeria and globally.
