Gombe State Commissioner for Education, Professor Aishatu Maigari, has commended the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for its commitment towards the growth of education in the State.

The commissioner made the commendation when the Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Tushar Rane, visited Kwadon Central Primary School, Yamaltu-Deba LGA, to assess some of their interventions in education in the State.

According to her, kudos must be given to the State governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for providing the political will without which "we will not succeed."

She attributed the success to the commitment and intervention made by UNICEF and other agencies of government whose hard work resulted in the adoption of new methods of teaching nursery and primary school pupils, which has proved successful.

She said, "the success you see here has so many stories behind it. It's a story of so much hard work from SUBEB, UNICEF, Ministry of Education, schools, teachers, cleaners, community and many others.

"We collaborated with UNICEF, they gave us technical support for this to be a reality. The community also, through the School Based Management Committee (SBMC) who made interventions in some areas in the school such as sinking of boreholes, planting of trees among others.

"There is need for sustainability when UNICEF pulls out, we need to have people to sustain it," she pointed out.

After going round to see how the new methods adopted in the learning process of the pupils, the Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Tushar Rane, expressed happiness seeing the children learning through the new methods.

He said, "it's more of a joyful learning while they do various activities, adding to child development both physical and mental activities."

He also commended the role of the SBMC, the State Ministry of Education for ensuring that the children learn at the right level.

Commending the teachers, Dr. Rane said, "the teachers have put in a lot of efforts to analyse children and at what level of learning. I see some children who learn from alphabets, they are beginners.

"There was an activity around alphabets and in the local language, they could learn through that. The little advanced level was the words and paragraphs. So children were making words and making paragraphs of it which was good to see as well.

"As they progress, there are some children who were in the phase of story making. They were much advanced and I could see the fluency with which they spoke and I think the girls outshone the boys," he explained.

On the next line of action, he said, "we have seen what works and what doesn't work. All that we need to do is to scale up and I think the ministry of education is playing a proactive role around this.

"I think there are different models, which are available but definitely we got to learn from each other," he advised.
