Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, made a surprise visit to the Assembly Residential Quarters in Port Harcourt on Thursday, May 9, 2024, where lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule conduct legislative business.
The quarters are located along Aba Road in the state capital and the purpose of the governor's visit was unclear as the lawmakers did not hold a sitting on the day of the visit.
Recall that Fubara has been at odds with the house, dominated by members loyal to former governor, Nyesom Wike, for about six months.
In a video, however which surfaced today, the governor, dressed in casual attire and accompanied by security personnel and aides, was seen walking around the quarters before returning to his SUV and leaving.
The visit has sparked speculation about the governor's intentions and the ongoing tensions between him and the pro-Wike lawmakers.
This development was coming days after the Chief Tony Okocha-led caretaker committee of the All Progressives Congress asked the 27 lawmakers to commence the impeachment of the governor.
Also, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in the State led by its chairman, Allwell Ihunda, backed the call for the governor’s impeachment.
Ihunda, who is also the chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area at a media briefing on Wednesday accused Fubara of withholding local government allocation for April without a reason.
