Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State says his recent trip to the Kingdom of Morocco was intended to leverage on the country's advanced technology to transform the State's agricultural sector.
He stated this at the flag off of the 2024 sales of fertilizer for the wet farming season.
"The partnership is capable of bringing a new era of agricultural development for Gombe State", the governor said, adding, “my recent visit to the Kingdom of Morocco was focused on establishing robust partnerships in agriculture among other sectors.
"We are eager to leverage on Morocco’s advanced agricultural technology to transform our agricultural sector and bring a new era of agricultural development in Gombe State," he pointed out.
For the fertilizer sales, Governor Inuwa said the Federal Government had supported the State's 2,000 tons of assorted fertilizer with its own 2,000 making a total of 4,000 tons for the entire State.
He announced a 50% reduction in the price of the fertilizer for the farmers which translates to N22,000 for the cost of a 50kg bag of NPK fertilizer and to be delivered to all the 114 wards in the State.
He also explained that 2,000 tons of the fertilizer will be sold directly to farmers while the remaining 2,000 tons will be sold through cooperative societies with an option to repay the government through their harvest.
According to him, "This will ensure equitable and fair access to fertilizer by all and sundry, thus guaranteeing an optimum price for farm produce and enhanced food security in Gombe State and Nigeria at large.
"As we are all aware, timely access to agricultural inputs is crucial to enhancing agricultural productivity. In this regard, today’s flag-off of the sales of fertilizers to the farmers testifies to our commitment to enhancing agricultural production in the state.
"We shall ensure that the fertilizer reaches the grassroots by strengthening the fertilizer sales monitoring system so that the commodity reaches the correct beneficiaries.
"The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, security agencies, and civil society organizations have been directed to closely monitor the effective sales of fertilizers to the farmers," Governor Inuwa said.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Dr Barnabas Malle, commended the governor for approving the numerous support and interventions in the agricultural sector of the State.
While calling on farmers and herders to live in peace with one another so as to benefit from the projects and programmes of the State Government, Dr. Malle assured the Governor of the Ministry's readiness to ensure that the fertilizer distribution and sales are monitored closely.
"We will not allow any body or group of persons to sabotage Your efforts in this direction", the Commissioner vowed.
