The legendary Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, was laid to rest on June 28, 2024 in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Mr. Ibu, who passed away on March 2, 2024 after battling a severe and unidentified illness, was honored by his family, friends, and fans during the burial ceremony. His adopted daughter, Jasmine Okafor, had previously appealed for support for his medical treatment abroad, but despite extensive efforts, his health continued to deteriorate, leading to the amputation of his leg after seven surgeries.

Known for his iconic comedic performances, Mr. Ibu's career spanned numerous Nollywood films both domestically and internationally, including the popular "Mr. Ibu" series.

In April, the family of Mr Ibu announced that the actor will be buried on, Friday, June 28.

The burial ceremony opened with a novelty match on June 25, followed by a candlelight procession the following day.

A wake-keep ceremony at the actor’s compound was held on Thursday while a thanksgiving service will be held on June 30.

In a video posted by the veteran actor Victor Osiagwu on Friday, the body of Mr. Ibu was being taken in a black SUV to the graveyard.

Some of the colleagues of Mr Ibu at the event include fellow actors Charles Awurum and Patience Ozokwo.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, was also present at the burial ceremony.

Mr Ibu was born on October 17, 1961, in Umunekwu, Nigeria’s former Eastern Region; now called Nkanu West LGA, Enugu state.

After elementary school in 1974, he moved to Sapele to stay with his brother, after his father’s demise.

In Sapele, he did menial jobs so he could sponsor himself to school and support his family.

He worked as a hairstylist, ventured into photography, and also got employed in a company that produces crates.

After secondary school, he was admitted into the College of Education, Yola but pulled out due to finance.

He later enrolled in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) as soon as he was financially buoyant.
