Peter Obi clarifies party affiliation, reiterates loyalty to Labour Party

Peter Obi, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has clarified his party affiliation amidst recent reports and conflicting interpretations of his statements.

In a statement, Obi emphasized that he remains a committed and loyal member of the Labour Party, dismissing any speculation about his departure from the party.

The clarification came after Obi was confronted by a journalist at Abuja airport regarding his statement on the Obidient Movement, which some had interpreted as a signal of his departure from the Labour Party.

Obi's statement aimed to put to rest any doubts about his party affiliation, reiterating his loyalty to the Labour Party.

Obi had on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 made disclosed that the Obidient Movement is not affiliated with any political party. The Obidient Movement, he had said, instead, is a diverse and inclusive collective that transcends political party lines, sex, tribe, religion, or geopolitical areas.

According to him then, the clarification became necessary following reports of a political party creating a directorate for the Obidient Movement.

In other words, the Obidient Movement is not limited to any political party and is a broad-based collective that seeks to bring together people from diverse backgrounds to work towards a common goal of transforming Nigeria, he had clarified Wednesday.

That said, Obi’s loyalty to the Labour Party, he said, is not in doubt.

"I remain a faithful, committed, and loyal member of the Labour Party," he emphasized in the present statement, making it clear that he has no intention of leaving the party.

Below is full text of his statement on the matter:

“For the avoidance of doubt, ‘I remain a committed, Loyal Labour Party member’. That is my definitive response to all Nigerians who may be in doubt about my party affiliation in the light of recent reports and conflicting interpretations of recent political expressions.

“I have just been confronted by a journalist at Abuja airport wanting to know if my statement on Obidient Movement yesterday is a signal of my leaving the Labour Party.

“For the attention of all those holding such an impression and for the general public, I remain a faithful, committed and loyal member of the Labour Party.

“Indeed as a Leader of the party, my aspiration, and desire working closely with other Leaders is to reconcile our valued members, and partner with like minds, and parties all over the country to build a strong and better Party that will catalyze and commence the rebuilding of a new Nigeria.

“My statement yesterday was intended to clarify some issues that are of concern to our teeming supporters some of whom are not members of any political party but are desirous for a new Nigeria. Our goal and aspirations remain that a new Nigeria is POssible.”
