Lamine Yamal, the 16-year-old Barcelona star, has been making headlines with his impressive performances in the Euro Cup 2024. He became the youngest player to score in the tournament's history when he scored against France in the semifinal.
However, his participation in the final against England faces a legal hurdle due to German labour laws.
German laws prohibit minors from working past 8 PM, with athletes allowed to work until 11 PM. This means Yamal cannot participate in the extra time or penalties if the game reaches that stage.
In the group stages, Spain had to substitute Yamal in matches against Croatia, Italy, and Albania due to these laws, as playing beyond 11 PM would incur a €30,000 fine for the Spanish Football Association.
The Euro Cup 2024 final is scheduled to kick off at 9 PM, which should allow Yamal to play the full 90 minutes without violating the laws.
However, the issue arises with extra time and penalties, which could extend beyond the 11 PM deadline. Despite this, it is unlikely that the German government will fine Spain for violating the labour laws.
Spain, with three Euro Cup wins, will aim to add to their tally, while England will look to secure their maiden victory in the tournament.
England's best finish was in 2020, where they lost to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the regular time.
