Nigeria's Super Falcons Thursday, July 25, 2024, faced a narrow defeat against Brazil, losing 1-0 in their Olympic opener in Bordeaux, France.
The match mirrored their last Olympic encounter with Brazil, which ended in a similar fashion 16 years ago.
The Brazilian side who had suffered an embarrassing early exit at the last FIFAWomen’s World Cup last year, came into the contest with 10 wins out of 15 matches played. They were no doubt the better side but struggled in the early stage of the match as Rashidat Ajibade tormented the South American side.
Gabi Nunes however, scored the decisive goal in the 37th minute, capitalizing on a lapse in Nigeria's defense.
Despite a spirited performance from captain Rashidat Ajibade, who created several chances, the Falcons struggled to convert opportunities.
Rasheedat Ajibade captained the Super Falcons as they took to the pitch at the Stade Matmut Atlantique, marking Nigeria's return to the Olympic tournament after a 16-year absence.
Ajibade led from the front with impressive runs down the left flank against Brazil, but her teammates failed to capitalize on several occasions when she delivered the ball into the penalty area
The Nigerian side will next face Spain in their group stage match on Sunday, July 28, 2024, aiming to bounce back from this setback.
Spain, who are the reigning World Champions, defeated Japan 2-1 in the Group C’s opener in Nantes on Sunday evening (July 20, 2024).
