Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia made history by winning the women's 100m gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a stunning performance.
Alfred crossed the finish line in 10.72 seconds, setting a new national record and beating the highly-favored Sha'Carri Richardson of the United States, who claimed silver in 10.87 seconds.
The victory came amidst drama at the track, as Jamaican star Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a five-time world and two-time Olympic 100m champion, withdrew just before the semi-finals due to an injury sustained after being denied access to the warm-up area because of a rule change requiring athletes to arrive with their team buses.
Alfred's stunning performance in the rain at the Stade de France will go down as one of the biggest upsets in Olympic sprinting history, as she dethroned Richardson, who was widely tipped to win gold.
