American pop sensation Mariah Carey has announced the devastating loss of her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, who both passed away on the same day over the weekend.

In a heartfelt statement released on Monday, August 26, 2024, the 55-year-old Grammy-winning singer expressed her profound sorrow. "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life on the same day," she said.

Despite the immense grief, Carey felt grateful for the time she spent with her mother in the week leading up to her passing. "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," she added.

Patricia Carey, a renowned Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was a significant influence on Mariah's music career.

She was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey. They shared three kids — Alison, Mariah and Morgan.

The couple divorced when Mariah was 3 years old.

The singer has previously spoken about the complex and often tumultuous relationship she had with her mother, detailing their bond as a "prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment" in her 2020 memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey".

Mariah Carey's relationship with her sister, Alison, was also complicated. The two were estranged, and Mariah had previously mentioned that it was "emotionally and physically safer" for her to have no contact with Alison and their brother, Morgan.

The causes of death for Patricia, 87, and Alison, 63, have not been disclosed. Mariah Carey has requested privacy during this difficult time, appreciating the love and support from her fans and friends.

Mariah Carey is one of the best-selling music artistes, with over 220 million records sold worldwide.
