Letsile Tebogo of Botswana made history on Thursday night August 8, 2024 at the Paris 2024 Olympics by becoming the first African athlete to win the men's 200m gold medal.
Tebogo stunned the favorite, American Noah Lyles, with a stunning performance that set a new African record of 19.45 seconds.
Tebogo's victory was especially poignant as he had lost his mother just two months ago. In a touching tribute, he inscribed his mother's initials on his nails to keep her close to his heart during the race.
American Kenny Bednarek took the silver medal with a time of 19.62 seconds, while Lyles had to settle for bronze in 19.70 seconds.
Lyles, the reigning 100m champion, had hoped to complete the sprint double at the Paris Olympics but was denied by the rising star from Botswana.
Tebogo's historic win marks a significant moment for Botswana and the entire African continent, as he becomes the first athlete from the region to claim gold in the 200m event at the Olympics.
