President Bola Tinubu has officially begun using Nigeria's new presidential jet, an Airbus A330, which he boarded on Monday for a trip to France.
This aircraft, according to the Presidency, replaces the ‘outdated 19-year-old Boeing B737-700 previously acquired under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, although millions of Nigerians are questioning the justification of such luxury purchase at a time the people are facing the worst kind of hunger in the nation’s history.
In line with the government argument though, Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga stated that the new jet will significantly reduce maintenance and fuel costs, saving the country millions annually.
Onanuga said the airbus A330 will save Nigeria “huge maintenance and fuel costs, running into millions of dollars yearly” in servicing the old aircraft. Nigerians nonetheless are not convinced.
The upgrade also follows parliamentary concerns about the safety and efficiency of the old plane, especially after it malfunctioned during a trip to Saudi Arabia.
