Nigerian powerlifter Bose Omolayo has added another medal to her illustrious career, winning the silver medal in the women's Up to 79kg Para Powerlifting category at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Omolayo, who previously claimed gold medals in the same category at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, achieved this feat by lifting an impressive 145kg.
Omolayo began the competition by setting a new Paralympic record with her initial lift of 145kg, surpassing the previous record of 141kg she set in 2021.
However, the competition became increasingly intense as China's Han Miayou, the current World Record holder, lifted 146kg in her opening round.
Despite facing a significant challenge, Omolayo attempted a 151kg lift, which unfortunately aggravated an injury in her right arm. She was unable to complete the lift on her third attempt. Han Miayou seized the opportunity, breaking the World Record with a remarkable 154kg lift. The bronze medal was awarded to Egypt's Safaa Hassan, who lifted 139kg.
This silver medal marks Omolayo's third consecutive Paralympic medal, solidifying her status as one of the top powerlifters in the world.
