[UPDATED] Nigeria Soars to Victory: Lookman, Osimhen lead Super Eagles to 3-0 win over Benin in AFCON 2025 qualifiers

In a dominant display, the Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign with a resounding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic at home to top Group D.

Libya and Rwanda, the other sides in the group, had ended their match Day-One encounter 1-1 on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 in Tripoli, the Libya capital.

This win today by the Super Eagles marked a triumphant start for interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who took the reins for his first match.

The match was highlighted by stellar performances from Nigeria's dynamic attacking duo. Ademola Lookman stole the show with a brace, showcasing his clinical finishing and creativity on the pitch. 

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria's leading light, added to the tally with a goal, further solidifying his reputation as one of the continent's top forwards.

Nigeria travel to Kigali to face Rwanda in Match-day 2 on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, while Benin Republic host Libya in their adopted home Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Two teams from each of the 12 groups will qualify for the finals, to be hosted by Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
