In a significant development, Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity and the official spokesperson of the President, has announced his decision to proceed on an indefinite leave of absence.
This move is necessitated by pressing medical issues affecting his immediate and nuclear family.
Ngelale, according to a press statement he personally signed, submitted a memo to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, on September 7, 2024, informing his office of this decision.
In the memo, he expressed that the decision was made after extensive consultations with his family over the past few days, as a "vexatious medical situation has worsened at home."
This leave of absence means Ngelale will temporarily cease functioning in his roles as Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Official Spokesperson of the President, Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.
Ngelale acknowledged the timing of his leave is unfortunate but emphasized that his family's health takes priority. He hopes to return to his duties when his family's situation improves and has requested privacy for his family during this challenging time.
This announcement comes amid ongoing public discourse, including protests in some parts of the country, over recent policy changes, highlighting the importance of clear communication from the presidency.
However, Ngelale's decision underscores the personal and familial commitments that sometimes necessitate such difficult choices.
