Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, has tragically passed away following a horrific attack in which her former boyfriend allegedly set her on fire.
Cheptegei, who recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing 44th in the women's marathon, had been living and training in western Kenya.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, 2024, when Cheptegei returned to her home in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County, after attending church.
Her former boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, is reported to have snuck into her home and doused her with petrol before setting her ablaze.
Cheptegei sustained severe burns covering approximately 80% of her body and was immediately taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries due to organ failure on Thursday morning.
A report filed by the local chief said the two have been fighting over a piece of land.
Confirming Cheptegei’s death on Thursday, the Ugandan Athletics Federation (UAF) described the athlete as a victim of “domestic violence” and called for justice.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” the tweet reads.
“As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”
The attack is part of a broader pattern of domestic violence against female athletes in Kenya. This incident follows the deaths of other notable athletes, including Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua, who were also victims of violent assaults by their partners.
Cheptegei's death has been met with widespread condemnation, with the Ugandan Athletics Federation and the Ugandan Olympic Committee expressing deep sadness and calling for justice.
Her legacy as a dedicated and accomplished athlete will be remembered, and her tragic death highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect women from such heinous acts.
