CAF launches investigation into disturbing treatment of Nigeria's Super Eagles in Libya

The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has said that it is taking serious action following the troubling ordeal faced by Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, at a Libyan airport. 

Stranded for over 16 hours under distressing conditions, the team which left Nigeria, Sunday, October 13, 2024, was allegedly directed to land at Al Abaq airport by Libyan authorities. 

CAF in a press statement on Monday, October 14, 2024, said it has contacted both Libyan and Nigerian officials and referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board for investigation. 



The Nigeria Football Federation has since withdrawn the Super Eagles from their upcoming match, citing unacceptable treatment. 

The team has now safely returned to Nigeria.

MEDIA RELEASE - COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE 

14 OCTOBER 2024 

“CAF views the disturbing and unacceptable experiences of the Nigerian National Football Team ("Super Eagles") at an airport in Libya in a very serious light. 

“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team ("Super Eagles") and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities. 

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.
