President Bola Tinubu has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara and political leaders in Rivers State to maintain calm and uphold the rule of law amid rising violence following recent local government elections.
In a statement, he directed the police to secure local government offices and restore order, emphasizing that public facilities must be protected from vandalism.
Tinubu cautioned against self-help in a democratic society, advocating for judicial resolution of electoral disputes instead.
His call for restraint has faced criticism from Nigerians, who suggest addressing the root causes of the unrest directly.
“In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state,” a press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser, Information & Strategy, said
The press statement further states that President Tinubu urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions.
The statement further reads: “President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.
“While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions.
“President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism.
“He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.
“According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.”
Netizens however believe that the president knows exactly where the problem lies and instead of addressing it, has chosen to play politics with the lives of the people of Rivers.

The scenes are too glaring to the blind, and to loud to the deaf. Nigerians can easily decipher that the duo has the support and backing of the President.
Rivers State is a keg of powder. The FGN should be very mindful of they handle it.
