Elton John has songs for every occasion. Some of his tunes lend themselves to weddings, funerals, or other important moments in life. Most of his work can be enjoyed at any time, and he has released countless singles that millions of people love any time of the year.
The singer and piano player has also dabbled in Christmas music on several occasions. Every time he releases holiday tunes—especially so in the past few years—he succeeds, and his relatively small number of seasonal cuts have all become hits in one regard or another.
One of his most recent additions to his yuletide canon rises again this week as Americans celebrate, and as it does, it brings the legend to a new peak.
“Merry Christmas” is climbing on a number of charts in the U.S. this week. The cut, a duet with Ed Sheeran, lifts from No. 29 to No. 27 on the Holiday Streaming Songs chart, Billboard’s ranking of the most-streamed tunes in the country that focus solely on the jolliest time of the year.
No. 27 now marks not only a new high for “Merry Christmas,” but also for John himself. The tune is his only hit on the Holiday Streaming Songs chart, so every time it pushes to a never-before-known peak, the musician himself resets his own record as well.
The same can be said for Sheeran, who likewise ascends to a new peak. Like John, he’s only sent one track to the holiday-only streaming ranking, and he and his friend earn their newly-established high together.
“Merry Christmas” is performing so well on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music in the U.S. at the moment, the track even manages to return to another, similar, but far more competitive, tally. John and Sheeran reappear on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart at No. 38, meaning their collaboration is one of the 40 most-streamed tracks in the nation. The cut is currently only a few rungs away from its No. 34 peak.
John and Sheeran’s “Merry Christmas” finds its way back to its best placement ever on the Holiday 100, which acts just like the Hot 100, only with a focus on Christmas tunes. “Merry Christmas” steps up from No. 33 to No. 29, matching its previously-set high.
“Merry Christmas” isn’t John’s only hit on the Holiday 100 this week, and it’s not even his only win to reach a special position. The pianist’s much older “Step Into Christmas” holds at No. 64 on the busy tally, which is the highest it’s ever climbed.
