Anya Ndi-Igbo, a prominent pan-Igbo socio-cultural group, has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the revered leader of the pan-Yoruba group Afenifere.
Adebanjo, who died on February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos, was celebrated as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history.
In a heartfelt statement signed by nearly 10 Igbo groups from both Nigeria and the Diaspora, Anya Ndigbo described Adebanjo as a fearless advocate for justice, democracy, and true federalism. His unwavering commitment to these ideals has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.
Adebanjo’s legacy is characterized by his relentless pursuit of equity and his role as a voice for the marginalized. In its tribute Anya Ndigbo describes the late Chief Adebanjo as a Nigerian leader because his public life guided, inspired, encouraged and influenced fair minded people towards the common good of all the people of Nigeria.
In the statement signed by about 10 Igbo groups both within Nigeria and the Diaspora, Anya Ndi-Igbo states that Pa Adebanjo “advocated for justice, equity, collaboration and sound judgement. His position cost abrasive challenge who play corner games as central sports but he took them on the chin, because he was convinced of the validity of the principles that underpin his positions.”
The statement continues: “God blessed him with a long life. He used it to do God’s work by speaking the truth without being compelled or induced to.
“Chief Adebanjo had earned his pips and could have remained silent or out-source his position, but remained steadfast till God called him over. He has joined the pantheon of the great and history will reckon him as a patriot of no mean order: Who meant whatever he said; Practiced what he preached; and Asked others to do as he does and did.
“His resolute and very clear voice will be sorely missed.
“May the Angels of God welcome him to the community of the Saints Triumphant.”
