Nigerian singer Ayra Starr was a big winner at the 2025 MOBO Awards, taking home two prestigious awards.
The ceremony, which celebrates achievements in Black music, was held in Newcastle, United Kingdom, on February 18, 2025.
Starr won both ‘Best International Act’ and ‘Best African Music Act’. She is the first African female to win Best International Act and the first female to win Best African Music Act in 16 years.
At the ceremony, other winners included Darkoo, who won ‘Best Female Act’, Central Cee, who won ‘Best Male Act’, 90sbabyshow, who won ‘Best Media Personality,’ and Odeal, who won ‘Best Newcomer’.
Ayra Starr gained prominence after the release of her hit song, “Bloody Samaritan,” in 2021. Since then, under Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, she has continued to gain popularity and has received numerous awards and nominations.
In 2025, Starr won the MOBO Award for Best International Act, beating out fellow nominees such as Tyla, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tems.
She had a successful year in which she released her second album, toured globally, performed at festivals like Glastonbury, and prepared to support Coldplay on their stadium tour.
Juls, a British Ghanaian producer/DJ, won Best Producer.
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr became a viral sensation after releasing her hit track ‘Bloody Samaritan’ in 2021.
Under the music producer Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, the songstress has gained popularity in the industry.
She also earned a plethora of awards and nominations for her craft.
