Fire erupts at crude storage facility in Rivers State, no casualties reported


A fire broke out on the dry crude storage barge BESTAF5 at Cawthorne Channel 1, Rivers State, around 14:10 hours on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

The incident quickly spread to nearby barges but was successfully contained, thanks to the rapid response of emergency teams and industry partners.

NNPC Ltd. confirmed that there were no casualties and all personnel were safe. The fire did not impact flow station operations, alleviating concerns about potential disruptions in oil production.

Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.,  in a press release, stated, “Thanks to the swift response of our emergency teams and industry partners, the fire was successfully contained.” 

He emphasized the company’s commitment to safety and environmental protection.

Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire, while NNPC Ltd. reassured stakeholders of its operational integrity and dedication to preventing future incidents.
