Ikenna Erinne, a 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, reportedly died by suicide after losing a child support case to his ex-wife. The incident occurred on January 26, 2025.
Erinne had been engaged in a lengthy divorce and custody battle with his former wife. A US court ruled in favor of his ex-wife, ordering Erinne to pay $15,000 monthly in child support. According to a Nigerian-American named Clayton Udo, the court’s decision took a severe financial toll on Erinne, which led to his death.
Udo stated that Erinne had spent a lot of money on legal fees before the court’s verdict. Udo also noted that Erinne lost his license as a cardiologist and was restricted from seeing his children.
Erinne reportedly died by shooting himself .
Another member of the Nigerian community in the United States, Obim Onujiogu, also confirmed Erinne’s death in a post on Facebook. Onujiogu described Erinne as a compassionate healer and devoted family man.
Erinne’s funeral will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, in Maryland. He is survived by his children Ugonna and Munachi, his parents, and his siblings Chuks, Onyi, Kenny, and Gechi.
