Former national chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo and Prince Uche Secondus, have congratulated Chief Sunday Ude-Okoye on his appointment as the party’s National Secretary.
They also commended the National Working Committee (NWC) for upholding the rule of law and party discipline.
In a joint statement released in Abuja on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the former chairmen stated that the party leadership’s recognition of Chief Ude-Okoye demonstrates a commitment to the rule of law, portraying the party as a truly democratic institution.
The PDP has been dealing with internal issues, leading to divisions. Tensions surrounding the National Secretary position intensified after the South East nominated Ude-Okoye to replace Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who had been selected for the Imo governorship.
Nwodo and Secondus, in the statement signed by their media adviser, Ike Abonyi, warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Federal Government to allow the opposition parties to breathe as a strong opposition is the right measure for vibrant democracy all over the World.
The experienced party leaders advised the new secretary and the members of the NWC to work towards strengthening the party to position it as the party to beat in the subsequent elections.
The duo advised the party leadership to be forward-looking and not allow their acrimonious past to affect their vision for the party.
The Board of Trustees (BoT) has affirmed Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary, backing the PDP governors amidst the leadership crisis.
The National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, has also asked the National Working Committee to immediately swear in Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary.
Ajibade affirmed his support for the Board of Trustees panel’s report, emphasizing that both Ude-Okoye and Senator Samuel Anyanwu should accept the panel’s findings.
