The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025, in observance of Presidents’ Day.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced the closure on its X handle on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025, in observance of Presidents’ Day. We will resume normal operations on Tuesday, 18 February 2025,” the statement read.
Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the third Monday of February.
It originally honored George Washington’s birthday, but now celebrates all U.S. presidents.
The holiday was established in 1879 as Washington’s Birthday and moved in 1971 to provide more three-day weekends. The official federal holiday is still Washington’s Birthday, though Presidents’ Day is the common name.
Essential services will still be available through emergency channels during the closure, but routine consular services will resume after the holiday.
