In a significant political shift, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) councilor candidates from Nnewi North Local Government Area, who participated in last September’s contentious Anambra State’s LGA elections, have officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This decision marks a pivotal moment as the group also pledged their unwavering support for Sir Paul Chukwuma in the upcoming APC governorship primary on April 6, 2025, as well as in the general election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
The former YPP members who moved to the APC include; Hon. Amobi Okonkwo, who was the YPP candidate for Otolo Nnewi ward 1 and a Senior Special Assistant to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah on Persons with Special Needs; Hon. Chigbo Uzor, YPP secretary in Nnewi North LGA and the party’s councilorship candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 2. Hon. Ugochukwu Ofodile was Otolo Nnewi ward 3 YPP candidate.
Meanwhile, Hon. Izuchukwu John Uzochukwu, former CSO to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and YPP councilorship candidate for Uruagu Nnewi ward 1, was among the defectors. For Uruagu ward 2 and 3, we have Hon. Nonso Ojukwu and Hon. Chidiebere Esione. Hon. Uzochukwu Chukwuma and Hon. Okanume Onyeka are for Nnewichi Nnewi Ward 1 and 2. For Umudim Nnewi Ward 1 and 2, Hon. Ifenna Jinwa and Hon. Stanley Okeke, were admitted into APC from YPP.
In a joint statement, after they were formally received into the APC, the councilorship candidates said their decision was based on Mr. Chukwuma’s “unbeatable capacity” and the fact that he is a “round peg in a round hole,” adding that he would rescue Anambra State from mediocrity.
The defectors were received by Hon. Nonso Okafor, former House of Assembly member for Nnewi North, and former APC candidate for the Nnewi North, South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency.
Hon. Okafor is the Nnewi North LGA coordinator for Sir Paul Chukwuma Primary Campaign Council. The Nnewi North LGA Chairman of the APC, Prince Innocent Orizu, also received the defectors from YPP.
Many APC stakeholders and ward chairmen of the APC were on ground to receive the new entrants into the party.
