Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of corruption and habitual abuse of women during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State.
In an interview on ‘Untold Stories’, Atiku claimed Akpabio’s misconduct extended beyond financial mismanagement to include mistreatment of women, a pattern he alleges continued into Akpabio’s current role as Senate President.
Atiku’s comments come amid broader scrutiny of Akpabio’s leadership, with allegations of financial impropriety, including claims of diverting over N700 billion during his governorship and involvement in a N40 billion fraud at the Niger Delta Development Commission.
Despite these allegations, Akpabio has not been convicted, though civil society groups have called for investigations into his financial dealings.
The interview snippet, shared on social media, has reignited public debate over Akpabio’s suitability for leadership, particularly as the National Assembly recently approved President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State, a move Atiku criticized as politically motivated.
