In a dramatic turn of events, former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Melvin Pinnick has lost his seat on the FIFA Council.
Pinnick, who was seeking re-election, garnered 28 votes, just one vote shy of the 29 secured by Djibouti’s Souleiman Hassan Waberi, who clinched the fifth and final spot.
The election, held during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly in Cairo, saw Morocco’s Fouzi Lekjaa top the polls with 49 votes.
Hani Abou Rida (Egypt) and Djibrilla Hima Hamidou (Niger) followed with 35 votes each, while Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya and Waberi also made it to the council with 29 votes apiece.
Pinnick’s narrow miss marked a disappointing end to his bid for continued influence in global football governance.
For the women’s slot, Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros emerged victorious with 30 votes, securing her place on the council.
This defeat signals a setback for Pinnick, who had previously been a prominent figure in African football administration and a member of FIFA’s highest decision-making body since 2021.
